Under the pretense of meeting up with his family, Brooks and Bianca climbed the stairs of the Lincoln memorial on a warm Friday evening. As they reached the end of the stairs, instead of heading into the chamber to see Lincoln, as most visitors do, the two cutover to the left, to the corner of the memorial, a conveniently vacant area in an otherwise crowded public place. There, as dozens of tourists looked on, Brooks lowered himself on to one knee, extracted a ring from his blazer pocket, and proposed to Bianca. With the Washington monument bright in the distance, Bianca said yes.
